Most of them are simple fakelore, like Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox, Pecos Bill, or old John Henry. I knew a man once who put all of them to shame, mainly because he was real. Everything you heard about him was genuine, which is why you’ve all kept coming back for the last thirty years to ask me about him. You want to know the man, if everything you heard about him is true; if he did all those incredible things the evidence suggested. After all this time, now that those lawyers aren’t getting paid their Judas’ silver to guard me anymore, and the family’s all but left me for dead, you get your chance to come over to this nursing home I’ve ended up in to ask me about Hank Stearns. You aren’t the first G-Men to come calling, at least those who could make it through the wall of suits my family put up to shield me from you bloodsuckers. Stearns’ been dead for over thirty years now, and I can tell by your eyes you want to know about the last hit he ever done that night back in fifty-seven . . . the night when he took on a building full of mobsters and came out barely alive. Is that what you really want to know, how he did it, or do you want to know why he did it?
