"Iron Man" - Mini-review
Went to see "Iron Man" last night. Here's my short, non-spoiler, review: Very few superhero movies ever reach the heights of one's exepctations. Even famed director Ang Lee failed to live up to the comic's fans with his effort to bring the Incredible Hulk to screen. Sometimes it's best to leave a medium in its original form and avoid such mistakes as "Daredevil" , "Ghost Rider",and the deplorable "Batman and Robin",With such misses floating around in DVD bargain-bins across the country, the pain these cinematic turds inflict hurts all the more when compared to the recent offerings of such excellent movies such as the X-Men series, "Superman Returns", and now Jon Favreau's "Iron Man". With a role fitting just as well as the armor-plated suit of the titular hero, Robert Downey Jr. is at home in the role of Tony Stark as he was in "Chaplin". With a sardonic gleam in his eye and an attidute to launch a thousand missles, Downey eats this role up and serves ample portions to a hungry audience. We see a sly, sarcastic Tony Stark at the opening of the film, but by the time the suit makes its first appearance, we see a man transformed, willing to give up all the riches his company makes from weapons manufacturing to lead a more altruistic life. Enter suit--enter fun. But it's not all about the special effects. It's great, don't get me wrong. It's HOW we get there and what we experience that makes it great summer entertainment. Suspense, intrigue, and lots of humor blend well together with the high-energy action sequences. Remember how you felt when Peter Parker took his first leaps over the urban landscape in "Spider-Man"? Well, that feeling is back, and it's gone supersonic. :) 4.5 out of 5 stars
